Part of the library program in Kindergarten to 5th grade is to introduce students to libraries and the world of reading. To encourage students to read, the library media center has created a reading program specifically for them. Each month the library will be highlighting a different Creative Reader Challenge. Some months we will offer a small prize for meeting the challenge, but other months it will be just for fun.
September Creative Reading Challenge 2016:
To help students grow as creative readers, the Lowe Library is challenging students and their families to create their own “Literary Discovery Bottles” during the month of September. Students are encouraged to choose a story, read it, and then create a Discovery Bottle about it. Discovery bottles are amazing in that they are a fun way to extend a favorite book. Simply find a clear free-standing bottle. Then looked around for a few small objects that represent an idea, character, or object from the book you have read to place in the bottle. You can also add one to four liquid ingredients: water so the items can easily move around in the bottle, baby oil if you would like your items to float, a drop of liquid soap if you need to add bubbles, and food color if you would like to color the water.
The Winner of the September Creative Reader Challenge is Sahil in Ms. Hayes Class. He submitted The Amazing Spider-man, by Bendon discovery bottle. The items in the bottle is Spider-man (the hero of he book) and spiders (Spider-man got his super power from a spider bite). Below are some of the discovery bottles from Lowe Students. |
For Elmer, by David Mckee I added colorful square blocks like the colors and squares in Elmer’s patchwork coat. I also added a small toy elephant to the bottle.

October Creative Reader Challenge 2016
In honor of having authors Amanda Driscoll and J Scott Savage this month, we thought it would be a great time to encourage students to share their thoughts about a favorite book. For this month’s Creative Reader Challenge the Lowe Library is challenging students to write a book review or, for the more creative, create a book trailer about a favorite book.
Book reviews are amazing in that students can offer their very own opinion about a book they want others to read. To create a book review visit Lowe Readers Corner at http://jcpsky.libguides.com/c.php?g=525599 and fill out the electronic form. There are some examples of book reviews on this page to give you some good ideas. Keep visiting the site to see if we post your review!
Book trailers are a more creative approach to sharing a book. A book trailer is a video advertisement to promote books and encourage readers to read it. To find some examples of book reviews created by Lowe students please visit Lowe’s Reader Corner at: http://jcpsky.libguides.com/lowelibrary. To get even more ideas there are many other types of book trailers you may view on the internet. If you choose to create a trailer, please make sure:
- You add the title and author of the book as well as your first name, last initial and teacher name
- You show enough information so others will be excited to read the book.
- Do not give away the ending!
- Trailers should be between 1 and 2 minutes in length.
- If you would like your trailer to be considered for posting on the Lowe Readers Corner site you must post it first on Youtube.com. (Springsite, the host for the Lowe Readers Corner site, requires a URL for all videos so using Youtube is the only way we can get your video on the Lowe site).
The winner of this month's Creative Reader Challenge is Ellie R. in Ms. Busam's class for her book review on Harry Potter. Congratulations Ellie!

It is a wonderful opportunity to learn about these people and begin a discussion of what things you can do to help the community and the world with your family. May be one of the people you read about will inspire you to do great things in your life. This month you are challenged to read about a famous person and then create a poem and a biography bottle about him or her.
The Frazier Museum was kind enough to donate two sets of passes to the museum in honor of this Creative Reader challenge. We decided to turn the challenge into a contest and all students who participated in the challenge had their names placed in a hat for a blind drawing. The winners of the Biography Bottle Creative Reader Challenge are:
