Neil Brewer, Poet
Indiana University Southeast professor, Neil Brewer will speak to our students about how he comes up with ideas for his poems and shares many objects from his childhood that some of his poems are based on. He will also share several poems that have been turned into songs just by creating a beat/tune even though he has no official musical training. Neil is fabulous at keeping the kids attention as they learn a lot about what it was like to be a kid years ago: lining up to receive a shot at school, playing dodgeball, riding in the car with your siblings, walking to school, getting that first box of crayons and keeping all the important trinkets from one’s childhood in a special spot.

Marsha Forchuk Skrypuch
Marsha tricked her teachers into thinking she knew how to read until it caught up with her in Grade 4. They made her repeat the whole year. So she taught herself how to read by taking out the fattest book in the children’s section of the Brantford Public Library — Oliver Twist. She renewed it over and over, for a whole year! Reading that book was a turning point in Marsha’s life.
After a degree, a career, and many book rejections, Marsha’s first book was published in 1996. She has published a book almost every year since then. Her books seem to follow a general theme — young people plunged into the midst of war or oppression. She is best known for her World War II trilogy that began with Stolen Girl. These books are available in many countries and have been translated into several languages. She has received many awards for her writing. Marsha lives and writes in Canada. |
