While other students were dreaming about summer vacation, the students of Lowe Elementary were hard at work making bookmarks, but these were not just any ordinary bookmarks. These bookmarks were specially made for children they never met who live on the other side of the globe. By participating in the Students Rebuild Literacy Challenge, our students created 875 bookmarks in support of the challenge. For every bookmark they made $1.00 was donated. These bookmarks were all created the last week of school when we learned about the challenge. Many of our students stayed in during their free time, during school parties and after school to create more bookmarks.
By creating these bookmarks, Lowe students hoped they would be helping children in Mali, Nepal and Peru get the resources they need to reach their literacy goals and their deserved brighter future. Students from all over the world were invited to participate in this challenge and guess what? We reached our global goal. 300,000 books marks were created and sent and the Lowe bookmarks were part of that amazing number. The Bezos Family Foundation has now donated $300,000 to the Literacy Boost program which will help finance the support the children in these countries need learn how to read and write. Way to go Lowe students!!!
