Overview
The Bluegrass Book Battle is a JCPS/LMS program for reading motivation and comprehension sponsored by the hosting libraries. Students are exposed to quality literature representing a variety of literary styles and viewpoints. The goals are to encourage reading for enjoyment, broaden reading interests, increase reading comprehension, and promote cooperative learning. Lists of books are chosen from the Kentucky Bluegrass Award nominees for the current school year. Students prepare for the battle by reading the books, discussing them and quiz each other about their contents. Then students compete in teams to correctly answer questions based on the books in a “quiz show” format. The Ballad and Team Challenges involve higher critical and creative thinking levels to solve a problem and come up with creative but well thought out solutions. Teams compete at local (Kingdom) and district (Empire) levels. Teams may also compete in a book trailer competition and a good knight service to other teams to earn additional awards. |
