The Bluegrass Book Battle is a JCPS/LMS program for reading motivation and comprehension sponsored by the hosting libraries. Students are exposed to quality literature representing a variety of literary styles and viewpoints. The goals are to encourage reading for enjoyment, broaden reading interests, increase reading comprehension, and promote cooperative learning.
Lists of books are chosen from the Kentucky Bluegrass Award nominees for the current school year. Students prepare for the battle by reading the books, discussing them and quiz each other about their contents. Then students compete in teams to correctly answer questions based on the books in a “quiz show” format. The Ballad and Team Challenges involve higher critical and creative thinking levels to solve a problem and come up with creative but well thought out solutions.
Teams compete at local (Kingdom) and district (Empire) levels. Teams may also compete in a book trailer competition and a good knight service to other teams to earn additional awards.
· The Ballad:
willl begin the tournament. This is the whole team part of the competition. Teams have 3 alternative ballad options for their selected book.
· The Round Table:
A coin toss or sword drawing will determine which team will begin the battle. When a question is asked, the team will have 10 seconds in which to discuss and answer the question. Only team leaders may answer on the team’s behalf. If answer is incorrect an opposing team can answer the question (in accordance with a question rubric if there are 3 teams battling).
· Team Challenge:
The librarian will determine which 4 members will participate in this interactive hands on activity.
· The Duel:
For each question, any of the 4 members of any team may buzz in to answer the question.
There are 10 types of questions used during the battle with alternative types of questions for non fiction and poetry books. The questions are based on explicit and implicit understanding. Creative level understanding questions will be reserved for the Ballad and Team Challenges.

Purpose of the Empire Tournament
The premise behind the activities at the Empire Tournament is to bring unity and comradeship between all students and all schools in each Kingdom. Our Kingdom this year is Lowe, Carter and Kerrick. Our Kingdom will compete against other Kingdoms in the Empire (JCPS School District) for the rank of Ultimate Kingdom. In addition, each 1st place team in each Kingdom will compete against each other for the 1st place school rank in the Empire.
Students are encouraged to wear a costum with a medieval theme or a character from one of the BBB books. Our team will also be creating a banner and a battle cry for our team. By creatings these items we earn points for our Kingdom.
