What Makes a Hero? While listening to the story What it Takes to be a Hero, by Kelly Sipe, 2nd grade students discovered a hero is person who is admired for great or brave acts or fine qualities. After learning about the fine qualities of a hero (honesty, patience, bravery, being caring, courageous, etc.) they wanted to find people who have these qualities and may deserve an award.
Students were excited to work in pairs to learn more about and then nominate one historic figure for the World Hero Award. To do this they chose a person they were inspired by while reviewing their profiles on the PebbleGo Biographies database. They then completed a research packet using the information they learned during their research. Students created the following presentations using a program called PhotoStory. The presentations show pictures of the famous person, student voice-over and information they found during their research to explain why their historic figure is a hero and deserves the World Hero Award.
